Policies that Matter to America’s Seniors

President Trump has a long track record of protecting seniors’ benefits from cuts and working to put more money in the pockets of older Americans. Since he first ran for the White House in 2016, President Trump clearly articulated a plan to protect the interests and security of senior citizens. Seniors Matter for America supports the President’s efforts to ensure economic and health security for seniors in a fiscally responsible manner.

Voters of every age agree that federal policies should protect older adults and secure the benefits that they have been promised. To achieve these goals, we promote key policies that can be categorized into three priorities:

  1. Protecting promised benefits for seniors.

  2. Putting more money in seniors’ pockets.

  3. Ensuring long-term health care for seniors.

In the months ahead, we will work tirelessly to advance these principles on behalf of older Americans. Below are eight key priorities that President Trump has already articulated or implemented that will guide our advocacy to protect seniors.

  • Protect Social Security Benefits

President Trump’s budget reflected his promise to make zero cuts to Social Security benefits for any American senior. Despite lies from his opponents, President Trump promisedrepeatedly to never cut Social Security. President Trump has kept his promise and Social Security benefits are projected to grow every year. The White House supports annual cost of living increases including a 2.8% hike announced for 2026. The President’s 2026 budget also included a 30% increase in Social Security Administration funding for program integrity to ensure that all seniors receive their rightful benefits.

  • Protect Medicare Benefits

There are nearly 70 million Americans who rely on the promise of Medicare for their health coverage. Of those Medicare participants, 90% are seniors aged 65 or older. President Trump has kept his promise to protect Medicare benefits for Americans from any cuts. The recently signed One Big Beautiful Bill also protects Medicare from fraud by ensuring that only legal U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for Medicare (Sec. 71201). We support the President’s pledge to maintain promised benefits. We will also seek a way to prevent looming Medicare cuts in 2033 when the Medicare trust fund becomes insolvent.  Medicare Advantage is a popular, Trump supported program for seniors that allows individuals to use private insurance plans to provide their health care using support from the Medicare program. In a recent survey, 90% of participants gave Medicare Advantage favorable reviews. We will work with Congress and the White House to grow this popular program.

  • Create Permanent Tax Deduction for Every Senior

The President fought for and won a new, $6,000 tax deduction for seniors early this year as part of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025” (OBBB). While the media did little to promote the new tax cut for seniors, Americans over 65 years old will notice when they receive a personal exemption of $6,000 per individual ($12,000 per couple) starting with 2025 tax returns. The new tax cut is a $91 billion tax cut for seniors that every Democrat voted against. We will fight to make this provision indexed for inflation and permanent.

  • Cut the Cost of Prescription Drugs

Lowering prescription drug prices is a major issue facing seniors on limited budgets. President Trump has been focused on this issue for his entire second term and he is getting tangible results. The White House has already announced historic guarantees by pharmaceutical companies to lower the cost of drugs starting early next year.

  • End All Taxes on Income from Social Security

Under the President’s new tax deduction for seniors, 88% of all seniors will effectively pay no tax on their Social Security wages according to analysis from the White House Council of Economic Advisors. While this is a huge new savings for American seniors and a promise kept by President Trump, we will continue to advocate for the expansion of this policy and the total elimination of any taxes on Social Security income. Future sessions of Congress should revisit this issue and eliminate Social Security income taxes by the time the deduction expires at the end of 2028.

  • Ensure Care and Nursing for Seniors

Long-term health care and access to quality at-home and inpatient nursing care are key concerns for seniors in America. We are focused on guaranteeing that every senior has the ability to receive affordable care at every stage of aging. President Trump has a long track record of supporting nurses and protecting nursing home residents. The President’s latest budget also shifted federal housing assistance funding from able-bodied working age adults to older Americans and retirees. It is imperative that funding for housing, nursing, and long-term care is targeted to aging populations.

  • Affordability for Seniors

The median age of retirement is 62 years old in 2025. From that point on, retirees rely on planned savings and earned benefits as their income. That means that affordability is a major issue for seniors. President Trump is working hard to address affordability and lower the cost of living. Washington should support policies that continue to lower gas prices and address the costs of home heating and electricity. We support President Trump’s focus on affordability and will work to help develop policies that lower costs for every senior around the country.
